Brief Bio  

Professor Saon Ray is an economist specialising in industry and international trade, her research interests include global value chains, technological upgrading of Indian industries, free trade agreements, technology transfer, foreign direct investment, efficiency and productivity of firms, financial inclusion, and energy and climate change related issues with an emphasis on questions of policy relevance.
She holds a Ph.d. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on the role of intellectual property rights in transferring technology to developing economies.

(The objective of this study is to highlight measures that the G20 forum can adopt to  strengthen the financial resilience of member countries to natural disasters.)

(The study looks at the case of the Indian consumer finance sector in improving  financial inclusion in India).  

‘China India Dialogue.’ 2016-17. Funded by New Climate Economy. (The focus of the dialogue is on developing shared analytical and research agendas  around which to engage high-level political and business actors and to inform policy). 

‘De-carbonization of Indian Railways’. 2015-2016. (Principal Investigator).  Funded by Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British High Commission.  (This study estimates the growth in passenger and freight demand of Indian  Railways in 2030-31 under three scenarios of GDP growth: optimistic, realistic  and pessimistic and the energy required for passenger and freight transport, including  in-vehicle electricity consumption, electricity energy consumed for hauling and  electrical energy consumed in the hauling of non-suburban and suburban  passenger transport).

• ‘Enhancing India’s participation in Global Value Chains.’ 2013-2015.  (Principal Investigator). (in collaboration with University of Sussex). Funded by  Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British High Commission. 

(This study examines India’s participation in global value chains through a better  understanding of India’s positioning in the global production system)

• ‘Low carbon pathways for Growth in India.’ 2014-2015. (Principal Investigator).  Funded by Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British High Commission. (This study provides an analysis of the realistic low carbon pathway that India could  achieve while pursuing its development goals).  

• ‘Impact of American Investment in India.’ 2013. (Principal Investigator).  Funded by American Chambers of Commerce in India. 

(The study investigates the socio-economic impact of US investment in India. A survey  of American firms was conducted in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.) 

• ‘New Climate Economy.’ (Cities) 2014. Funded by the Global Commission on the  Economy and Climate.  

• ‘Climate change and the Economic Competitiveness of Cities: Making the  Business case for adaptation.’ 2012-2014. Funded by Rockefeller Foundation. (The aim of the study is to understand how and under what conditions can a city’s  adaptation decisions also contribute to its economic competitiveness).

(This study examines the validity of the proposition that CTT generates revenue and  examines the price and quantity effect and the effect on speculative activity due to  imposition of the tax}.

(The study examined the firm-level strategies related to design, production and  marketing and also identifies internal and external factors that have enabled firms to  move up the value chain.) 

• ‘Study on Petrochemicals Feedstock.’ 2011. (Principal Investigator). Funded by  Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturers Association. 

(This study examines the feedstock scenario for petrochemicals in India in terms of  availability, pricing, regulatory and fiscal issues. It provides an illustrative per unit cost  of production for ethylene produced from both naphtha and ethane for India).

(The study examined the current and future trade flows between India and Turkey,  identified the sectors of India’s trade interest and the areas of possible co-operation  between the two countries).  

‘Making SAFTA Effective: An Approach to Prune Sensitive Lists in South  Asia.’ 2010. Funded by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). 

(The objective of this study is to examine the commodities currently in the sensitive  lists of India, and to offer an approach and economic rationale for pruning the sensitive  lists maintained by India for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.)
