Projects Undertaken (at ICRIER):

  1. Understanding EV Trade & Investment Work Program (WP) I. 2021-22. Funded by Climate Works. (This study looks at the trade and investment requirements, barriers, investment gaps and the skill gaps in promoting EV in the country, the state EV policies to promote EV, government schemes such as the PLI schemes in automobiles and auto components and the PLI in ACC).
  2. Clean and Just Transitions funded by WRI. (Principal Investigator) Commenced from June 2021. (In this study, we are looking to provide an industrial approach to just transitions in India. The study looks at two industries (auto to EV, and steel) to envisage the low carbon and the just transition pathway. The impact of Border Carbon Adjustment Taxes in the chosen industries was investigated.  To provide a macroeconomic context to the study, an examination of the value added, exports and competitiveness of industries was undertaken).
  3. FDI Reforms: Economic Impact and Implications on Sustainable Development (Co-coordinator) Funded by Invest India. Commenced from September 2021. (In this study, we examined the impact of foreign direct investment inflows on the sustainable development in India).
  4. Analysing Tariff Sensitivities of India for the UK-India Comprehensive Trade Agreement (Co-coordinator). Funded by FCDO. 2021-2022. (The objective of this study was to examine the tariff sensitivities of India to imports from UK. Data analysis and extensive stakeholder consultation in NAMA and agricultural items were conducted).
  5. ‘Evolution of the Finance Track and A Way Ahead’ (Principal Investigator). 2020 Funded by Department for International Development (DFID), UK and Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

(The objective of this study is to highlight agenda formation in the Finance Track in the G20 in the run up to India’s own presidency in 2022).

  1. Study on RCEP goods and services’ (Principal Investigator). 2018-19. Funded by Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India.

(The Department of Commerce, Government of India, commissioned the comprehensive study on the impact analysis of RCEP for India to understand the possible gains and losses for the country in the RCEP).

  1. Financing Resilience against natural disasters.’ (Principal Investigator). 2019. Department for International Development (DFID), UK and Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

(The objective of this study is to highlight measures that the G20 forum can adopt to strengthen the financial resilience of member countries to natural disasters.)

  1. ‘Study on liberalization of the insurance industry in India.’ (Principal Investigator). 2019.

(This study traces the journey of the Indian insurance sector and identify the challenges facing the sector.)

  1. Application of Innovative Technologies for Promoting Financial Inclusion’. (Principal Investigator). 2017-18. Department for International Development (DFID), UK and Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

(The study examined the prospects for innovative technologies (blockchain and artificial intelligence) to understand their potential to contribute towards the goal of financial inclusion in the G20 countries).

  1. Effect of consumer finance on financial inclusion in India’. 2017-2018. (Principal Investigator).

(The study looks at the case of the Indian consumer finance sector in improving financial inclusion in India).

  1. ‘China India Dialogue.’ 2016-17. Funded by New Climate Economy.

(The focus of the dialogue is on developing shared analytical and research agendas around which to engage high-level political and business actors and to inform policy).

  1. ‘De-carbonization of Indian Railways’. 2015-2016. (Principal Investigator). Funded by Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British High Commission.

(This study estimates the growth in passenger and freight demand of Indian Railways in 2030-31 under three scenarios of GDP growth: optimistic, realistic and pessimistic and the energy required for passenger and freight transport, including in-vehicle electricity consumption, electricity energy consumed for hauling and electrical energy consumed in the hauling of non-suburban and suburban passenger transport).

  1. Enhancing India’s participation in Global Value Chains.’ 2013-2015. (Principal Investigator). (in collaboration with University of Sussex). Funded by Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British High Commission.

(This study examines India’s participation in global value chains through a better understanding of India’s positioning in the global production system).

  1. Low carbon pathways for Growth in India.’ 2014-2015. (Principal Investigator). Funded by Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British High Commission.

(This study provides an analysis of the realistic low carbon pathway that India could achieve while pursuing its development goals).

  1. Impact of American Investment in India.’ 2013. (Principal Investigator). Funded by American Chambers of Commerce in India.

(The study investigates the socio-economic impact of US investment in India. A survey of American firms was conducted in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.)

  1. New Climate Economy.’ (Cities) 2014. Funded by the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate.

  1. Climate change and the Economic Competitiveness of Cities: Making the Business case for adaptation.’ 2012-2014. Funded by Rockefeller Foundation.

(The aim of the study is to understand how and under what conditions can a city’s adaptation decisions also contribute to its economic competitiveness).

  1. Impact of Taxes on Commodity Derivatives Transaction.’ 2012. (Principal Investigator). Funded by MCX.

(This study examines the validity of the proposition that CTT generates revenue and examines the price and quantity effect and the effect on speculative activity due to imposition of the tax}.

  1. Strengthening the Textile and Clothing Sector in South Asia.’ 2012. Funded by Asian Development Bank.

(The study examined the firm-level strategies related to design, production and marketing and also identifies internal and external factors that have enabled firms to move up the value chain.)

  1. Study on Petrochemicals Feedstock.’ 2011. (Principal Investigator). Funded by Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturers Association.

(This study examines the feedstock scenario for petrochemicals in India in terms of availability, pricing, regulatory and fiscal issues. It provides an illustrative per unit cost of production for ethylene produced from both naphtha and ethane for India).

  1. Prospects for Enhancing Trade, Investment and Cooperation under the proposed India-Turkey FTA.’ 2010. Funded by Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India.

(The study examined the current and future trade flows between India and Turkey, identified the sectors of India’s trade interest and the areas of possible co-operation between the two countries).

  1. ‘Making SAFTA Effective: An Approach to Prune Sensitive Lists in South Asia.’ 2010. Funded by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).

(The objective of this study is to examine the commodities currently in the sensitive lists of India, and to offer an approach and economic rationale for pruning the sensitive lists maintained by India for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.)

  1. Implications of Ethanol Blending Policy India’, (Principal Investigator). 2010. Funded by SIAM.

(The study examines the rationale for the phase-wise implementation of the 5-20 per cent ‘Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP)’ in India).
